LATEST NEWS:
PAUL WATSON ORDERED SINKING OF THE ADY GIL AFTER COLLISION WITH SHONA MARU #2!

Paul Watson is founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and seems to have found an effective tool in recruiting naïve followers and spreading the word about the nature of his organization's missions --- he lies.

Here are just a handful of examples:

THE LIE:

Speaking to a collision on January 6, 2010 between a Japanese whaling vessel and the Sea Shepherd vessel Ady Gil: "The Ady Gil, a Sea Shepherd vessel, it's a fast patrol boat, was sitting still in the water when the Shonan Maru #2 came by, deliberately turned into it, rammed it, cut it in half, sunk it and destroyed it."
- Paul Watson in a radio interview with FSRN.

THE TRUTH:

Another whopper of a lie has recently come to light as we've learned that the Ady Gil did not sink as a result of the collision with the Shona Maru #2. As it turns out, Peter Bethune, the builder and captain of the Ady Gil, has admitted that although damaged, that after the collision, the Gil was sound and afloat, saying, "The boat was definitely salvageable. It was still rock solid...It would have stayed afloat for sure." Bethune reveals he was ordered to scuttle it "in order to gain public sympathy."

Another significant lie in Watson's colorful and less than truthful version of what transpired is that the Ady Gil was "sitting still". As can be see clearly in this video, the wake of the Gil at the moment of impact is significantly greater than just a few seconds before.

Additionally, the Ady Gil was not "cut in half" as can be clearly seen from the photo below. Of course, given Watson's history of far bigger and more damning lies, we may be able to chalk this one up to simply hyperbole.

THE LIE:

"In 30 years, we've never injured anybody, we've never broken a law."

THE TRUTH:

Paul Watson was convicted in Norway in 1997 and has an outsanding warrant in Costa Rica for the attempted murder of a fisherman. A long, but far from complete, list of his and the Sea Shepherd's crimes are detailed below:

1979: An S.S. ship rams the whaling ship "Sierra".

1980: The "Sierra" is sunk in Lisbon harbor. S.S. claims responsibility.

1981: The S.S. claims to have sunk two whaling vessels, "Ilsa I" and "Ilsa II".

1986: S.S. activists ordered to leave Faroese waters during whale harvest. Ignoring the order, Faroese police try to board the S.S. S.S. crew fires a line rifle and throw signal flares at police dingy. Petrol was poured into the water around the dingies and flares were used in what was preceived by the police to be an attempt to set the petrol on fire.

1986: The S.S. claims responsbility for the sinking of two Icelandic veseels and damage performed against an Icelandic whaling station.

1988: Paul Watson demands to be taken into custody in Iceland for the sinking which took place in 1986. He later recants his confession.

1991: A U.S. fisherman reports his vessel being rammed by an S.S. vessel.

1992: The S.S. makes three failed attempts at ramming Costa Rica fishing vessels.

1993: Paul Watson, captaining the S.S. vessel "Edward Abby", orders his crew to open fire on a Japanese fishing veseel. The crew refuses. The encounter can be seen in the 1993 documentary "Ocean Rider - Defenders of the Wild".

1993: The S.S. claims to have sunk 8 vessels and rammed and/or damaged 6 others.

1997: Paul Watson convicted in Norway and imprisoned in Netherlands for scuttling of a whaling vessel and ramming of a Norweigan coast guard vessel.

Despite considerable proof, pro-S.S. activists still try to deny this fact. Here are two Pro-S.S. sites that confirm this piece of the Sea Shepherd's sordid history.

2002: Arrest warrent issued in Costa Rica for Paul Watson for attempted murder and destruction or property resulting from an altercation with a Costa Rican fishing vessel.

2002: "We should never feel like we're going too far in breaking the law" - Paul Watson, Animal Rights convention 2002

2008: The S.S. vessel "Farley Mowat" is confiscated and two members of the crew arrested.

2009: Two S.S. crew convincted in Canada for their 2008 crimes. (note: this conviction was passed down AFTER Paul's comment to Larry King)

2010: Peter Bethune is convicted in Japan of all five counts he's charged with including assault, trespassing and vandalism.

2010: Paul Watson put on Interpol's wanted list.

THE LIE:

"All of the great whales are endangered."
- Paul Watson on "Larry King Live", June 2009

THE TRUTH:

The minke whale, currently the most commonly hunted whale, is not considered "endangered" or even "threatened" according the IUCN, the recognized authority in classifying endangered species. If anyone should know this it's Paul Watson.

THE LIE:

"They [Japanese whalers] haven't produced a single peer-reviewed international scientific paper in 23 years."
- Paul Watson in a radio interview with FSRN.

THE TRUTH:

The Australian news program "Catalyst" addressed this very issue in 2006. The show, with a clear anti-whaling stance, actually had enough regard for the truth to report the actual facts. "We’ve divided them now into the unrefereed papers and the papers that have been through a peer review process. And there’s 55 of those." and this quote comes from Dr. Nick Gales a renouned anti-whaling critic. So how do two vehemently anti-whaling people come to such vastly different conclusions? Well, Watson lies and Dr. Gales has the decency to be truthful. A more detailed transcript can be found here.

THE LIE:

"This is the Australian Antarctic Territory where these whales are going to be killed. This is under the sovereignty of Australia.
- Paul Watson speaking at Inverse Gallery November 28, 2007. (can be viewed here on Youtube)"

THE TRUTH:

The so-called "Australian Antartic Territory" or "Australian Whale Sanctuary" is in no way a legtimate maritime claim. In fact, only 4 out of 194 countries even recongnize this claim. Japan is NOT one of those four.

THE LIE:

"The whales they're targeting are protected."
- Paul Watson on "Larry King Live", June 2009

THE TRUTH:

The whales they are targeting under the "research" exclusion are not protected.

THE LIE:

"Sea Shepherd believes the following about the Canadian seal slaughter: It is a threat to the survival of the species" - S.S.C.S. official site, August 10, 2009 (http://www.seashepherd.org/seals/)

THE TRUTH:

As can be heard in an early interview with Paul Watson, harp seals are NOT endangered. Paul goes on to criticize animal conservation groups for their seal campaigns by saying "There are over a thousand animals on the endangered species list, and the harp seal isn't one of them." as well as "The seal is very easy to exploit as an image." Yet, years after this interview, Paul realized the truth of his statements and the Sea Shepherd stance against the harp seal hunt is a major part of their campaign. And there are 2-3 times MORE seals than there were back when Paul admitted they weren't endangered and simply an easy animal to exploit and raise money off of! The one intelligent observation which foreshadowed Paul and his Sea Shepherd Society was his final quote - "the organization becomes more important than the issue."

THE LIE:

"Sea Shepherd cooperates fully with all international law enforcement agencies and its enforcement activities complying with standard practices of law and policing enforcement. "
- SeaShepherd.org official website, July 2009

THE TRUTH:

"Guilty, guilty, guilty and proud of it!" - Paul Watson, July 3, 2009 on the conviction of two Sea Shepherd crew in Canada for illegal interference with the seal hunt.

Of course, there are about a dozen more examples above refuting Paul's lies about having never broken a law.

THE LIE:

"Sea Shepherd adheres to the utilization of non-violent principles in the course of all actions and has taken a standard against violence in the protection of the oceans. "
- SeaShepherd.org official website, July 2009

THE TRUTH:

Another of the shockingly blatant lies the S.S. and Paul Watson seem to have no problem in telling, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary.

As listed above, there are numerous documented cases of ramming and attempting to ram vessels and even sinking of ships.

"That fact is that we live in an extremely violent culture, and we all justify violence if it's for what we believe in ." - Paul Watson, speaking at the Animal Rights 2002 convention.

THE LIE:

"We go after unlawful activities." - Paul Watson on "Larry King Live", June 2009

THE TRUTH:

The whales being killed by the Japanese are hunted under the "research" exclusion which, it can be argued, creates a gray area, yet the harp seal hunt in Canada is 100% legal.
